Answer : It depends on the study you opt for citation. For a single study citation (SC), use past tense. To illustrate:
Biodiesel was shown to have promise as an alternative to regular diesel. (Arslan, 2007)
When referring to an area of inquiry, use present perfect. And use present tense when aim to refer to generally accepted knowledge of the discipline.
